Shopping cart software
Pixelmade has worked with Drupal Commerce, Ubercart, osCommerce, Magento, X-Cart and custom-built shopping cart applications.
From our experience designing dozens of ecommerce stores, we generally recommend open source or proprietary shopping cart software. However, each client is unique, and we will learn more about your specific needs before making a recommendation.
Types of ecommerce
Off-site ecommerce is where the customer places the order on your website, and is then redirected to a different website to input their credit card details. Once the credit card has been authorized, they are redirected back to your website. This is a cost-effective way of adding ecommerce to your website, and is a good first step.
With on-site ecommerce, the entire transaction takes place on your website (placing the order, inputting credit card details, and authorizing the credit card). On-site e-commerce is more complex to setup, and is therefore more expensive.
Pixelmade has developed dozens of ecommerce sites, with roughly half our clients having on-site or off-site ecommerce. We will learn more about your specific needs before making a recommendation on what's best for you.
How credit cards are authorized and debited online
A payment gateway is used to authorize and debit credit cards online. There are hundreds of payment gateway services, with the two most popular being Moneris and PayPal.
Moneris requires credit card merchant accounts (if you already have merchant accounts, you should confirm that they allow for online or "card not present" transactions). If you do not have merchant accounts, Moneris can help set them up. PayPal does not require your own merchant accounts.
In addition to Moneris and PayPal, Pixelmade has also worked with Google Checkout, Authorize.net, WorldPay, Epoch, Paycom, and Virtual Merchant. We will learn more about your specific payment gateway needs before making a recommendation on which is best for you.
